Abstract

Carbon disulfide is a coloress liquid that rapidly evaporates at room temperature and rapidly absorbed through the lung, less well through the skin, Carbon disulfide is primarily neurotoxic and has toxic effects on other multiple organs such as cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, opthalmologic, and genitourinary systems.

The study was performed to observe the toxic effects on nervous system including subclinical neuropathy. The subjects were 111 viscose rayon workers who are exposed to carbon disulfide.

The results are as follows:

1) 7 cases (6.3%) showed subjective symptoms and signs of central nerve system and they were exposed to carbon disulfide for 12 years 1 month in average.

2) 37 cases (33.3%) revealed neuropathy in electrodiagnostic study and the rate of neuropathy increased in proportion to the duration of exposure

3) The abnormalities of H reflex were early and dominant findings which were revealed in 29 cases (78.4%).

4) 35 cases (98%) out of 37 neuropathic cases were subclinical in symptoms and signs.

5) Carbon disulfide concentration in urine was significantly high in neuropathic group.

6) The hemorrhage and/or microaneurysm in fundoscopic examination revealed in 7 cases (6.3%) who are exposed to carbon disulfide for 13 years 2 months in average. All of them also revealed neuropathy in electrodiagnosis.
